MILAN, ITALY

Milan is a very different kind of Italian city from all the others we had seen. (No one even seems to know where the name comes from, and – to add insult to injury – English speakers have deemed even the final “o” of “Milano” superfluous.)

The lion has stationed himself outside this cathedral in Milano, considered the world’s fifth largest.

The thumb tells me that the guy in the purple gown and the white gloves must be American. European hitchhikers use a totally different signal.

The circular ceiling is the inside of a cupola, of course. A couple days a year some sunrays from directly overhead might even shine through (but you aren’t gonna get a sunburn, I can guarantee it).

A poignant memorial to the victims of the September 11 attacks has given a new name to a Milano thoroughfare: Largo 11 Settembre 2001.

Gray Man Holding White Bar Barrier on Red Background is trying to say: “One way, do not enter.” It’s back-breaking work, but he’s proud of keeping the citizens of Milano safe.

HOMELESS KITTENS

Cats don’t worry much about ruination. These cats hang out at the Ruins of the Emperor’s Palace in Milan without giving it much of a thought. This was the only place in Italy that we saw homeless cats, actually.

Have you ever seen pigeons unperturbed by the presence of multiple hungry felines just inches away? Remarkable. The lady in the blue checkered shirt has food and love to spare for her bewhiskered friends, and they return the same tenfold. Animals are like that.

THE MILANO HEIRESS

Or so do we imagine her. Doesn’t she have that certain
unmistakeable aristocratic air about her? And a dog
who responds to her accordingly.

DOGS IN SIMPLON PARK

What happens when two dogs go head to head – or nose to nose,
as the case may be? The beginning of a glorious canine
friendship, perhaps? Time will tell. Stay tuned for an update after our
next trip.

AND AT THE CAFE

Those raw, pickled pork intestines don’t tempt me at all, if the truth must be told. But for the right merchandise, a willing customer can always be found. This pooch has stepped up to the plate and made his position admirably clear: Gimme, gimme!
